Much has changed for residents over years

Article Abstract:

A medical resident in 1992 faces many more obstacles than his '60s counterpart. To start, his income is more heavily taxed - 23% vs. 2% or 3% in 1967. Textbooks are also more expensive. Today's resident is faced with medical conditions and technology that were unknown in the 1960s - devastating wounds wrought by semiautomatic weapons, new diseases, complex antibiotics and ultrasound. He must also deal with a larger number of non-English-speaking patients, who have diverse cultural biases about medical treatment.

Recollections of a medical examiner

Article Abstract:

The position of medical examiner (ME) is fascinating, enjoyable, saddening, rewarding and sometimes dangerous. Most deaths investigated are natural, and the ME must be skilled in consoling the deceased's family, particularly when someone has witnessed a violent death. A veteran ME reviews both common and uncommon cases from his career.
