Treating uncomplicated Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections: is the anatomic site of infection important?

Article Abstract:

Single-dose drug therapies for gonorrhea have excellent cure rates at all sites but the throat. The medical literature was reviewed to ascertain the effectiveness of various regimens of antibiotics for curing gonorrhea at specific sites of infection. A total of 16,737 infections were covered in 144 reports on 87 antimicrobial regimens. Overall cure rates were 96.4%. Generally, single-dose regimens effective against male urethral infections were effective against cervical and rectal infections also. Though throat infections were more difficult to treat, quinolones and cephalosporins cured about 80% of them. Cure rates are probably higher than reported because reinfections would be reported at follow-up as treatment failures. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations appear to be effective.

Decreasing incidences of gonorrhea- and chlamydia-associated acute pelvic inflammatory disease: a 25-year study from an urban area of central Sweden

Article Abstract:

Rates of acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may be reduced by controlling epidemics of gonorrhea and chlamydia infections. Researchers in Sweden analyzed hospital records of 2,499 patients with acute PID over a 25-year period. Rates were highest in 1976, with 180 admissions. Usage of intrauterine devices was also high in the mid-1970s, as were rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia infections. Rates of acute PID dropped steadily after 1987, with only 26 admissions in 1994. The age distribution of women with acute PID shifted from younger women in the 1970s to older women in the 1990s.
