Multidisciplinary collaboration: conceptual development as a foundation for patient-focused care

Article Abstract:

Targetting a few key topics when redesigning patient- focused and collaborative health care systems may prove helpful. Thirty-six health care professionals from a 42-bed orthopedic unit were interviewed about their concept of and experience with multidisciplinary collaboration. Interview analyses revealed four recurring themes. These were communication, identifying professional roles, cooperation, and patient care coordination. Strategies to improve collaboration may include regular conferences, clear patient care plans, and cross-training.

Patient-focused care: what is it?

Article Abstract:

The format for a health care framework called patient-focused care has been presented. This framework is designed to streamline and improve health care delivery based on patient needs and hospital economics. Principles for patient-focused care include placing patients requiring similar services together and in close proximity to those services, cross-training staff members, and minimizing paperwork. Implementing this framework may require significant hospital lay-out changes.

Patient-focused care: anatomy of a failure

Article Abstract:

Several potential obstacles to a successful transition to patient-focused care have been highlighted. Mistakes may include failing to test the plan, not involving staff members or patients in the process, making drastic changes in staff roles and administration, or being conservative with the transition budget. Casualties of these mistakes may be patient satisfaction, staff morale, efficiency, or the implementation of patient-focused care itself.
