Multiple condom use and decreased condom breakage and slippage in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Rates of condom breakage have dropped in Thailand, especially when more than one condom is used at a time. Researchers asked Thai prostitutes to send them used condoms after each sex act. The condoms were then examined for breakage. Of 7,594 condoms examined, about 2% broke when a single condom was used, 0.2% broke when two condoms were used and no breaks occurred when more than two condoms were used. These rates are significantly less than the 5.9% breakage rate found in 1992. A national condom campaign was instituted in Thailand and greater skill in condom use among sex workers could explain lower breakage rates.

Epidemiology of HIV-1 infection in opiate users in Northern Thailand

Article Abstract:

Opiate injection may be an important risk factor in HIV infection among drug users in Northern Thailand. Researchers surveyed 4,197 patients at a drug treatment center in Mae Rim, Thailand, and found that nearly 19% were infected with HIV. HIV infection was four times more common among lowlanders than in members of ethnic hill tribes. Lowlanders are more likely to inject heroin or opium, and the hill tribes more commonly smoke or eat the drugs. Preventive education, including drug paraphernalia disinfection training and provision of sterile needles, may be effective in reducing HIV transmission.
