Musculoskeletal pain syndromes that affect adolescents

Article Abstract:

Diagnosing the cause of muscle and joint pain in adolescents may be difficult. Obstacles to diagnosis include mixed physical and psychological components and the many different potential causes. Diagnosis and treatment are described for psychogenic rheumatism, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, benign hypermobility syndrome, night cramps, shin splints, various forms of inflammatory arthritis, and disorders affecting the knee. Diagnosis demands a careful history, a thorough general physical examination, laboratory tests as appropriate. Treatment may involve medication, physical therapy, and psychological counselling.

Direct Observation of Health-Habit Counseling of Adolescents

Article Abstract:

Longer doctor visits and well-care visits may increase preventive health counseling by physicians to their teenaged patients. Researchers observed 445 patient visits with 119 doctors in community family practice medical offices. Healthy-habits advise was offered in 38% of visits, and it most often was exercise counseling. Doctor visits that included healthy-habits advise averaged nearly three minutes longer than visits that did not. Adolescent preventive health recommendations may be more effectively followed if doctors take more time with patients, and occasionally see them when they are not ill.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue: the holistic perspective

Article Abstract:

Women facing fibromalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) should utilize a treatment plan that is interdisciplinary, holistic and includes alternative therapies to support the client and family. More attention is focusing on research for these diseases; however, the impact can still be physically and emotionally devastating.
