NIH initiatives to probe contribution of genes, environment in disease

Article Abstract:

National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched a pair of new initiatives with a goal to pinpointing the exact genetic basis of common diseases and providing tools to measure environmental contributions to those diseases. The initiatives such as the Human Genome Project will provide more information about the roots of the diseases that occur frequently while the Genes and Environment Initiative (GEI) will provide better technology and methods for measuring a personEs environmental exposures.

Anesthesia-Alzheimer disease link probed

Article Abstract:

Scientists are trying to probe the mechanisms behind anesthesia's ill effects on brain and to understand how these mechanisms might lead to cognitive dysfunction and accelerate the development of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers show that exposure to isofluorane has triggered amyloid [beta] accumulation and cell death in human cell cultures, thereby indicating a potential molecular mechanism of anesthesia-related cognitive decline.

Role of environment in addiction probed

Article Abstract:

Scientists are using innovative animal studies to show how stress and social factors cause changes in the brain that contribute to addiction. One such model that involves an imaging studying of dominant and subordinate monkeys housed alone or together shows effects of environment on levels of dopamine D2 receptors.
