NIOSH, Harwood Grants find safe haven in Congress

Article Abstract:

The Senate Appropriations Committee considered as part of the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill, two issues of interest to safety and health professionals--- the reorganization of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its impact on NIOSH and OSHAEs Harwood Grants. The new organizational structure moves NIOSH to become one of CDCs four coordinating centers, while placing safeguards on the use of the NIOSH funds even as the Senators recommended $294.6 million funding for fiscal 2005. The committee commended OSHAEs efforts on voluntary compliance programs while recommending a $468.6 million budget for fiscal 2005, about $11.1 million higher than the previous fiscal.

Out of sight, not out of mind

Article Abstract:

Remote workers whose numbers are now above 44.4 million, pose a challenge to health and safety professionals who lose direct control over their safety and health. International Paper Co. implemented a Working Alone Policy that guides employees on what to do during an emergency and has established a protocol for employees to check in through cell phones or two-way radio. Training remote workers to take control over their safety and adhere to the corporate safety culture is an important aspect of the companyEs safety practice.
