NVQ for you

Article Abstract:

Those who have been involved in national vocational qualifications (NVQs) within the UK healthcare sector have been expressing mixed views about the effectiveness of these qualifications. Some have welcomed the introduction of NVQs as a way of beginning a chosen career path, and some existing staff have reported that NVQs have allowed them access to skilled support workers. However, others emphasise that there has been a lot of bureaucracy connected with NVQs, and fear that lower paid NVQ assistants could take on work previously done by registered staff.

Under the spotlight

Article Abstract:

The success of the Project 2000 programme in producing knowledgable nursing professionals capable of satisfying future health requirements is being called into question by the government. A number of studies into Project 2000 are already under way even though the first students on the course will not qualify until Sep 1993. Calls for proof of the effectiveness of Project 2000 have raised concerns that government funding for the project might come under threat before the full impact of the scheme can properly be assessed.

Making the grade

Article Abstract:

Australia has been one of the pioneers in improving standards of nursing training, and has now upgraded all nurse preparation to bachelor degree level. Many observers now believe that this will also eventually happen in the UK, as standards of nursing training must be kept on a level with those in other countries. Attitudes are changing gradually as more and more young people go into undergraduate education and it is no longer regarded as just for a very small minority of the population.
