Nan's last days

Article Abstract:

The difficulties of a woman in caring for her elderly grandmother and the lack of help from professional carers are discussed. The grandmother, who was suffering from a terminal illness, appeared to be forgotten by doctors at times. After a time in hospital, she was sent home in a wheelchair without an assessment by an occupational therapist. It was difficult to obtain enough continence aids from district nurses, and respite care was lacking. Day hospital was good, although the grandmother suffered with infections acquired while in hospital.

Healthy practice

Article Abstract:

A leisure centre in Sheffield, England has proved a successful venue for a health promotion project. The location was selected as most people in good health are unlikely to visit doctors' surgeries for advice. A multi-disciplinary programme targeted specific groups using the centre over two days. The programme therefore covered women's health, child safety and general issues. About 488 visitors participated in the programme. All considered the health centre preferable to the surgery for advice.
