Weight loss associated with HIV seroconversion among injection-drug users

Article Abstract:

Weight loss of ten pounds or more among injection-drug users (IDUs) may be a common symptom and an accurate indicator of primary HIV infection. Seven of eleven IDUs reported a loss of four and a half kilograms or more three months before their positive HIV seroconversion. Seroconversion is the stage in HIV where antibodies develop and serologic test reads positive for the disease. Symptoms of HIV-seroconverting IDUs were different from those of drug users who did not seroconvert and demonstrated that oral ulcers and 35 years of age were also risk factors for primary HIV.

"Why I am not infected with HIV": implications for long-term HIV risk reduction and HIV vaccine trials

Article Abstract:

Many people at risk of HIV infection may overestimate their natural immunity to HIV infection. These people may need additional information on the probability of contracting HIV should they continue to engage in risky behaviors such as sharing drug injection equipment or having unprotected sex with people known to be HIV-positive.
