National patterns in the treatment of smokers by physicians

Article Abstract:

Many physicians are not taking advantage of annual patient visits to question patients about their smoking habits and offer them nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Researchers analyzed data from the 1991-1995 National Ambulatory Medical Care Surveys, which covered 145,716 patient visits to 3,254 physicians. Smoking counseling rose from 16% of all visits in 1991 to 29% of all visits in 1993, but then declined to 21% of all visits in 1995. NRT use also peaked in 1993, at 2% of all visits, then dropped to 1% in 1995. Patients with smoking-related illnesses were more likely to be treated.
