Neither side in abortion debate likes Daschle bill

Article Abstract:

Thomas A. Daschle's (D-S.D.) proposal that would ban late-term abortion of viable fetuses, except in cases where the mother's life is endangered, has met with opposition from both pro-choice and pro-life interests. Both factions are concerned about the interpretative leeway afforded by the bill's language. Pro-life advocates claim that the bill would allow fifth and sixth month partial birth abortions to perpetuate, while pro-choice advocates worry about the bill's emphasis upon the 'life-threatening' aspects of post-viability abortions.

Justice Scalia: want abortion or assisted suicide? Pass a law

Article Abstract:

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia argued for an originalist interpretation of the Constitution at an AMA Leadership Conference. Scalia said that the writers of the Constitution did not even conceive of abortion and suicide issues, and that the Constitution should be re-interpreted to address these modern issues. Instead, Scalia argues, Congress should pass laws on this important social issues instead of relying on the courts to legislate from the bench.
