New abortion battlefront: state informed consent laws

Article Abstract:

Several states have passed informed consent laws specifying what physicians must tell women seeking abortions, but each state has been blocked from implementing the law. In each case, the law requires physicians to describe to women seeking abortion the abortion procedure, its risk and alternatives 24 hours before the procedure. Opponents argue that the laws would force physicians to act in support of state policy that seeks to discourage abortion.

Only doctors can talk about abortion in Title X clinics

Article Abstract:

In Nov 1991, President Bush issued a memorandum allowing only physicians to discuss abortion with patients at federally funded family planning clinics. The physicians must believe such information is 'medically warranted.' All other clinic personnel can tell women who ask that they are permitted to have an abortion. Clinic staff should give clients a list of pregnancy-related services that provide abortion counseling.

Administration has gain, loss on abortion issues

Article Abstract:

The House voted 260-148 to overturn a ban on federal funding of fetal tissue transplantation research funding, but the voting margin was four shy of a two-thirds majority, the amount necessary to withstand a presidential veto. Researchers are worried that a rejection of the bill would halt further scientific progress in the study of fetal tissue use. President Bush is expected to reject the House bill.
