New-born crisis

Article Abstract:

Neonatal units in the UK are suffering from lack of funding and insufficient staffing, according to a survey of 207 units by Baby Life Support Systems (BLISS), charity donating life support systems. Demand for places outstrips supply in 81% of the neonatal units surveyed. About 66% of units depend on charitable donations of equipment, while nine UK hospitals depend entirely on donations. Special care in neonatal units is required for 10% of new-born babies, and about 14,000 babies require intensive care. A neonatal specialist is only present in 65% of the units surveyed. A paediatric consultant is only in charge of 75% of units.

A street-wise approach: providing health care to sex workers is fraught with difficulties

Article Abstract:

Nurses are considering the decriminalisation debate regarding prostitution, which is seen as a serious women's health issue. Women prostitutes are often marginalised by the health care system and they do not always seek out health care. There are a number of outreach projects managed by nurses, including the Safe HIV Outreach Project in Birmingham, which is researching the risk of HIV infection to female sex workers.
