New guidelines for the treatment and management of people who self-harm

Article Abstract:

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (2004) has published guidelines on the treatment and management of the patients who self-harm and receive unsympathetic and inadequate health care in terms of their physical and mental health needs. The scope of the guidelines and the issues related to wound care are also discussed.

Seeing through the symptoms

Traditional psychiatric hospitals do not offer appropriate care, according to psychiatric nurse Ian Murray. He believes that there should be a more humanistic approach to psychiatric nursing and that emphasis should be placed on the person behind the symptoms.

From self-harm ... to self-esteem

Article Abstract:

Nurse Chris Dawson developed an innovative program at The Retreat, a mental care facility in York, England, which teaches self-injuring patients self-esteem and helps them to prevent their self-destructive impulses.
