New infections threatening world crisis

Article Abstract:

The world medical community is unprepared for major, impending epidemics. In the US, there is no effective system for tracking outbreaks of diseases not listed with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as notifiable illnesses. To handle new outbreaks, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Emerging Microbial Threats to Health recommends that the CDC expand its information gathering on hospital-acquired infection and focus on collecting information on antiviral drug resistance. It also recommended a national program to teach public health, epidemiology, and medical entomology.

Bush plan would change small-group insurance

Article Abstract:

The Bush Administration sent a draft bill to Congress that would require health insurance providers in a state to offer the same plan to every small employer in the state. Small employers are defined as companies with fewer than 50 employees. The legislation was designed to increase the availability and affordability of health insurance and to bar the exclusion of people with high-risk or pre-existing medical conditions.
