No holding back: urinary retention is common following some gynaecological procedures

Article Abstract:

Urinary retention can often follow certain gynecological procedures but the condition should be treated promptly to avoid the risk of long-term damage. Post-operative patients who cannot void need to be catheterized, but some hospitals may use detention catheters that are advantageous to staff but not to patients. Evidence suggests that intermittent self-catheterization is more beneficial to the patient and carries a lower risk of infection.

Improving outcomes through preoperative teaching: Preoperative teaching is vital in a high-quality and cost-conscious service

Article Abstract:

Preoperative teaching is important in preparing patients for surgery, helping patients to understand the need for surgery and feel more in control of the impending surgery. Nurses believe that teaching is their responsibility but they are hampered due to lack of time, heavy workloads and poor preparation. There should be more emphasis on preoperative teaching so that nurses can provide successful presurgical care.
