No implant conclusion

Article Abstract:

A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel declared that not enough information is available to determine the safety of silicone gel breast implants, and recommended tighter restrictions on their use. The panel decided that implants should be available only as part of a research protocol, and that participants must enter a national registry. Implants for cosmetic reasons would be limited. FDA Commissioner David Kessler is expected to rule on the recommendations in Apr or May 1992.

Article Abstract:

Surgeon General Antonia Novello released the latest Surgeon General's 'Report on Smoking' in Apr 1992. The report was prepared in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization, and focused on smoking in the 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The study found that more than 50% of young people in some urban areas smoke. The report recommended reinforcement of policies that prohibit smoking in public places, tobacco advertising and minors' access to tobacco.

Doctors told to boost adult immunizations

Article Abstract:

Doctors often neglect to vaccinate their adult patients against hepatitis B, influenza and other diseases. As a result, 5,000 people die each year of hepatitis B and 40,000 die of influenza. Since doctors tend to overestimate the number of patients they have inoculated, they need to develop a reminder system. High-risk patients, especially, need to be inoculated on a regular basis. Vaccinations are an effective way to hold down health costs and reduce illness.
