No one's a winner

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Department of Health has decided that nurses should only receive a minimal pay award because the National Health Service cannot afford a larger one. The Pay Review Body argues that morale is very low and the government should realise how much stress nurses are under because of staff shortages and increasing patient numbers. However, it accepts that the government's offer of a 3.8% pay increase is reasonable. The government acknowledges that there will be serious recruitment problems by the year 2005 and it has begun a recruitment campaign.

The axeman cometh

Article Abstract:

It is not always possible to avoid controversy, according to new National Health Service (NHS) Confederation Chief Executive Stephen Thornton. He enjoys dealing with media hostility, but does not feel that he deliberately seeks to be controversial. He favours an evidence-based approach to health authority management, and admits that changes to the NHS will sometimes be painful. He regards the management of NHS resources as his main priority in his new job.

Young, bright, on the way up
