Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

Article Abstract:

Patients with no history of excess alcohol consumption but who have hepatitis characteristics similar to alcoholic patients may have a disorder called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). An overview of this disorder was compiled from studies published in English between 1966 and 1996 on NASH. Tests on liver tissue samples can conclusively determine if a patient has NASH. Doctors should screen female patients with elevated liver enzyme levels for NASH who are also diabetic, obese, or who also have elevated lipid levels. Researchers have not identified a consistently successful treatment for patients with NASH.

Sentinel-node biopsy or nodal observation in melanoma

Article Abstract:

The Multimember Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial (MSLT) was initiated to study the usefulness of sentinel-node biopsy in the identification of patients with clinically occult nodal metastases and to evaluate the clinical effect of immediate, complete lymphadenectomy in patients with tumor-positive sentinel nodes. Findings indicate that sentinel-node biopsy has staging and prognostic value in patients with intermediate-thickness melanoma and coupled with immediate complete lymphadenectomy, improve survival among patients with a tumor-positive sentinel node.
