Nonobstetric emergencies in pregnancy: trauma and surgical conditions

Article Abstract:

Identifying and treating non-pregnancy related emergencies appropriately and in a timely manner could minimize the risk to mother and fetus. Guidelines for recognizing and managing an inflamed appendix, gallbladder, or pancreas and treating various traumatic injuries in pregnant women are presented. Care should be taken to place intravenous lines away from the lower body, minimize fetal exposure to x-rays, and position the mother's body appropriately during surgery or other procedures. The fetus should be routinely monitored using stress or non-stress tests following invasive or traumatic procedures.

Management of the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome may not experience complications from excessive gastric acid if the syndrome is diagnosed and treated appropriately. Zollinger-Ellison is a symptomatic malignant pancreatic tumor that causes excessive secretion of gastric acid. Researchers treated five women with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome who had seven pregnancies. One patient was treated with antacids, but antacids were considered ineffective. If patients are diagnosed before pregnancy, exploratory surgery and tumor removal or division of the vagus nerve should be considered.

Perinatal management of women with immune thrombocytopenic purpura: survey of United States perinatologists

Article Abstract:

Many doctors will allow pregnant women with thrombocytopenic purpura to try and deliver their baby vaginally instead of via a cesarean section. Thrombocytopenic purpura is characterized by low blood levels of platelets, and it leads to excessive bleeding.
