Nurse practitioner and GP

Article Abstract:

A nurse practitioner and a general practitioner (GP) explain how they work together to offer an holistic approach to health care, rather than just issuing prescriptions. The GP has been very supportive in encouraging the nurse practitioner to develop her role in the community and he is pleased to have a nurse with whom the patients can discuss their personal problems. They both feel that a caring approach is an essential part of patient-care and they are now getting involved in outreach work. They believe that they work well as a team.

Cutting edge care

Article Abstract:

A nurse endoscopist describes her work. The nurse takes direct referrals from local general practitioners and also sees some patients from the colorectal surgeon's list. Appointments for flexible sigmoidoscopy begin at 8.30 a.m., but the day could begin earlier with some emergency examinations related to conditions including gastric bleeding or breathing difficulties. The nurse takes biopsies, makes visual records of problems, and can bandage haemorrhoids. She also perceives health promotion to be an important part of her role.

What the doctor witnessed

Article Abstract:

A doctor describes how an elderly, terminally sick patient was left unattended and filthy on a ward in a London teaching hospital. The doctor told the story to a national newspaper and was accused by nurses of telling lies. However, he received letters from elderly people validating his claims. He worries that the nursing profession is more concerned with status and bureaucracy than in really caring for patients.
