Nurse prescribing by protocol

Article Abstract:

The Royal Marsden NHS Trust has introduced protocols which allow nurses to prescribe drugs to patients as a way of reducing waiting times and improve patient care. A working party worked closely with the chief pharmacist and recommendations were made about which types of medications were suitable and the level of training that a nurse would need to prescribe competently. Protocols are agreed by senior staff members and only specific nurses can prescribe. The Royal Marsden has protocols for five conditions, and waiting times have been reduced from an average of 10.5 hours to under 30 minutes.

Brain tumours

Article Abstract:

Primary brain tumours are rare, but they have serious consequences. They affect around 0.1% of the population each year. The exact cause of the cancer is not fully known, but disposing factors include radiation exposure. The most common primary brain tumour, which is the astrocytoma grade IV, gives survival averaging around 10 months with treatment. The average survival with secondary brain tumours, which occur in 30-40% of cancer sufferers, is less than six months. Treatment, which comprises symptom management, usually includes a combination of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
