Nurses - children - at risk

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service offers a poor standard of protection and care for pregnant nurses. Nurses should be aware of their rights and use their union and health and safety representatives to support them in any dealings with management. Pregnant nurses should not work in anesthetic or recovery rooms, look after patients with radioactive implants or who have AIDS. Employers are obliged to offer other work away from hazardous conditions. The type of work carried out by nurse, particularly long hours of physical work, may be also detrimental to a pregnancy.

Forge links for safe motherhood

Article Abstract:

'Nursing Times' is backing the UK government's aim to foster good practice among midwives with the Good Practice Network. A database is being established to collect examples of good midwifery practice. This will enable midwives focused on particular topics, either in the UK or overseas, to be put in contact. The UK government is also backing the Charter for Safe Motherhood, an international project in which Unicef and the World Health Organization are involved.
