Nurses' net assets

Article Abstract:

Social researcher David Gadd of the Cartmel Nursing Development Unit at Mental Health Services of Salford NHS Trust, Manchester, England, argues that nurses can benefit from using the Internet. He insists that the Internet is easy to use and points out that it allows nurses to obtain information for research work without having to leave the ward. The NURSE World-Wide Web service established by Birmingham University, England, nursing lecturer Denis Anthony is designed to help nurses find the information they are seeking. On-line information exchanges enable nurses to discuss issues with other health professionals.

Mother's ruin

Article Abstract:

It is important to diagnose and treat mental illness in new mothers early, according to Liz Hynes, senior midwife, speaking at the Motherhood and the Mind conference in Liverpool, UK, in the last week of October 1999. Midwives tend to take a wait and see approach to the mental welfare of new mothers. Midwives and health visitors need to liaise so that no indications of depression are missed.

The local picture

Article Abstract:

A telephone survey of 100 hospital trusts revealed that only 10 would give details of how they intend to top up nurses' 1% pay rise. At Southend Healthcare NHS Trust, auxiliary nurses have been offered 2.5% on top of the basic 1%; while at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital Trust nurses are expected to receive a total pay rise of 3.25%. Of the remainder, many had not even begun negotiations.
