Nursing home from home

Article Abstract:

Ex-nursing home matron Denise Riglin has built up a nursing agency which operates from a shed in her garden in Maldon, Essex, England. She has around 600 nurses on her books, up to 300 of whom work for her full time. The business is successful, and the garden shed provides neat and cosy headquarters. However, Riglin is involved in a dispute with her local council which maintains that she did not obtain planning permission to use the shed in this way. The local newspaper ran a story about the issue under a headline about a nursing agency operating illegally.

Temp staff, permanent risk

Article Abstract:

The Channel Four television series 'Dispatches' investigated the extent and consequences of relying on agency nurses to staff NHS hospitals. An undercover nurse secretly filmed nurses working on wards and discovered that about 50% of staff were from agencies. They make frequent mistakes and are not familiar with the type of wards they are put into. Hospital management deny that a large extent of their staff are agency nurses or that they pose a potential risk to patients. A related article about the undercover nurse is included.

Bottomley stresses that P2000 funds are assured

Article Abstract:

Allegations that Project 2000 must prove itself worthwhile within three years in order to secure funding have been refuted by health minister Virginia Bottomley. Bottomley claims Project 2000 will be continuously assessed. The full benefit of Project 2000 will not be seen for around 20 years, and some feel that three years is insufficient time to make a judgement. The various methods of funding students is part of the problem, and all nursing students could be on just one source of funding with the flexible legislation.
