Nutrients and sterols excreted in ileostomy effluents after a diet with autoclaved amylomaize or ordinary corn starch

Article Abstract:

A study was done on the nutrients and sterols excreted in ileostomy effluents after a diet with autoclaved amylomaize or ordinary corn starch. During the period of amylomaize diet, it was shown that there was a higher mean excretion of dry weight and potassium. A lower excretion of cholic acid was observed although no changes were seen for the values of cholesterol or chenodeoxycholic acid. It was concluded that a diet of autoclaved amylomaize in ileostomy patients may reduce the daily excretion of cholic acids.

The ileostomy model for the study of carbohydrate digestion and carbohydrate effects on sterol excretion in man

Article Abstract:

The ileostomy model which served as the basis for concepts on carbohydrate and starch digestion, effects of extrusion cooking in cereal fiber and total energy content in ileostomy effluents was evaluated. Results show that the use of the model in research studies is limited by the status of colonic function, operative technique and choice of ileostomy subjects. Other alternatives such as the intubation technique and breath tests were presented because of the various limitations of the ileostomy model.

Suggested sterol-binding mechanisms of dietary fibre based on ileostomy studies

Article Abstract:

Ileostomy studies show several immediate sterol excretion patterns and serum cholesterol-lowering effects in six to nine ileostomy subjects. The reduced uptake of cholesterol in ileostomy subjects causes reduced bile acid synthesis in the liver and a decreased excretion. Ileostomy studies can be used to precisely elucidate the serum-cholesterol mechanism in man.
