Nutritional status of children of urban leprosy patients staying at preventoria based on biochemical parameters

Article Abstract:

The dietary profile of children of leprosy patients that had been placed in a preventorium was developed. Results show that children segragated from their parents enjoyed better health than their uninstutionalized counterparts. However, these children exhibited lower weight-for-age proportions than control children of the same socio-economic status. This undernutrition may be due to a genetic intrauterine growth retardation and poverty and food deprivation experience in the first four years the children were with their parents.

Vitamin A status in children with pneumonia

Article Abstract:

A study of 34 pneumonic children aged up to 8 years suggests that a low plasma vitamin A level may be a result of an acute phase of infection. Children were divided into a control group receiving routine therapy and a study group which received vitamin A doses. After a week, in both the groups the mean plasma levels of vitamin A, carotenoids, retinol binding protein, albumin and total proteins had increased from their baseline.
