The prevention of obesity

Article Abstract:

Doctors need to do more to encourage their obese patients to lose weight. A 1999 study of over 1 million American adults showed that obese people were twice as likely to die from any cause as people of normal weight. As the mortality rate from heart disease drops, more effort should be placed on preventing other diseases related to obesity. Diabetes is one such complication of obesity. Doctors can join other groups such as public health officials, employers, urban planners and food manufacturers to find ways to prevent obesity.

Neuroendocrine responses to starvation and weight loss

Article Abstract:

Research on the neuroendocrine response to starvation could benefit the treatment of several disorders. In the 1950's it was discovered that the amount of body fat is regulated. The discovery of the peptide hormone leptin provided a link between adipose tissue and the brain. Leptin is secreted by adipose tissue and normally inhibits the production of neuropeptide Y in the hypothalamus. Neuropeptide Y stimulates food intake. As glucose is depleted, leptin levels fall and neuropeptide Y is produced.
