Arsenic poisoning of Bangladesh groundwater

Article Abstract:

Alluvial Ganges aquifers used for public water supply in Bangladesh and West Bengal are polluted with naturally occurring arsenic, which has adverse effects on people's health. It may be possible to guide the placement of new water wells so that they will be free of arsenic, following findings that arsenic derives from the reductive dissolution of arsenic-rich iron oxyhydroxides, which themselves are derived from weathering of base-metal sulphides.
