Offensive conduct

Article Abstract:

The UKCC's decision in Mar. 1996, to restore convicted rapist Yuen How Choy to the nurse register has provoked an outcry among some health-care professionals. Unison professional officer Karen Jennings argues that the decision indicates the UKCC's failure to understand that rape is about power and its abuse. Choy, who was struck off the register in 1986, was judged unfit to nurse by the UKCC restoration committee in Jun. 1995. The decision to allow Choy to nurse again less than a year later is described as perverse by former ethics and standards assistant registrar at the UKCC, Reg Pyne.

Throwaway lines

Article Abstract:

There is confusion about what medical equipment can be safely recycled despite new government guidelines. The new document sates that medical equipment that is labelled single use should not be recycled, although some equipment could be recycled if it meets with certain criteria. Health workers who reuse invasive disposable equipment could be risking medical negligence claims. Often the cost and time involved in recycling equipment is more than replacing with new ones.

Double vision

Article Abstract:

The number of NHS nurses has grown by 30,000 over the last 14 years, according to a government report. However, a report commissioned by the Royal College of Nursing reveals that although the number of nurses has risen over the last 14 years, the figure has dropped over 33% since 1983, with a further 20% drop forecast by 1997. Possible nursing recruits see the profession as offering poor job security, poor salary, high stress factor and workload.
