Article Abstract:

The medical profession has not won the expected victory over communicable diseases. The World Health Organisation claims that 30 new diseases have been identified in recent years, and old diseases, such as cholera and diphtheria, have re-emerged in some areas of the world. The reasons for the modern spread of diseases include relaxation on immunisation programmes, increased world travel, and changing economic conditions favouring the development of some microbes, and exposing the vulnerability of some humans.

The RCM has bought in support from MSF aimed at improving training for stewards and industrial relations officers. Some feel abandoned by RCM headquarters, and some feel that Changing Childbirth is being used to undermine their employment conditions.
