Old, down and out

Article Abstract:

Many elderly homeless people in the UK have mental health problems and specialist teams should be appointed in cities throughout the United Kingdom to care for vulnerable people who are being failed by the Community Care Act. Homeless people require more supported housing to help them learn basic skills. Outreach teams can locate the elderly homeless and advise them on accommodation and services, particularly as violence from younger homeless people is a major cause for concern. Eighty percent of the elderly homeless women surveyed claimed to never drink alcohol, contrary to public opinion.

Admitting solutions

Article Abstract:

Severe staff shortages in hospital accident and emergency departments and an increase in emergency admissions have brought some hospitals to breaking point. A survey reveals that most problems are blamed on a shortage of mid-grade doctors. Local initiatives are being developed to ease the situation. One example is the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, where a discharge lounge has been installed to help free beds.

Turning the league tables: do scoring systems designed to measure hospitals' performance needlessly pit professionals against each other - or do they provide useful comparisons?

Article Abstract:

There is the belief that scoring systems comparing hospital trust's performance pits professional against each other. League tables can lead to a distortion of accountability by placing local NHS problems on a national level. There is a call for a more accepted definition of the quality of A&E, mental health and blood services.
