On psychiatry and souls: Walker Percy and the Ontological Lapsometer

Article Abstract:

Walker Percy is a former physician turned philosopher who addresses a variety of topics from religion to science, especially the science of psychiatry and man's relationship with others. He wrote 'Love in Ruins', a social satire which highlights a new diagnostic tool that measures the maladies of the spirit. The Ontological Lapsometer capitalizes on the attitude of the behavioral sciences towards objectivity. It describes the seeming inability of psychiatry to address the conflicts man experiences, holistically. This can be due to the fact that the science of psychiatry itself experiences the problem of determining which models of behavior to adopt.

Boundaries of psychiatry

Article Abstract:

The history of modern psychiatry is recounted in order to assess its place in medicine as well as its contributions to society. It is seen that contradictions abound, as in the ideas of Sigmund Freud, who believes in a biologically inherent evil principle in man, and Eric Fromme, who believes that man is born good but is later corrupted by an evil society. To achieve a clearer delineation of its role, psychiatry must focus on providing effective cures for mental illness, not on providing guideposts to happiness or of moral behavior in general.

An adaptive approach to primary prevention in child psychiatry

Article Abstract:

Adaptive maturity in human beings is achieved with the initiation of omnipotence devaluation. Omnipotence devaluation occurs primarily at the teen ages. A psychiatric consultation during this period will prevent psychiatric illness in an individual. The psychiatric treatment involves the understanding of psychological progression involved and combating the progression.
