One disease, two epidemics - AIDS at 25

Article Abstract:

The most salient change in the 25 years since the first cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were recognized, is a widening of the gap between those who can afford the potent antiviral therapies and those who cannot, so that in 2006 a single virus is responsible for two distinct public health calamities. However, the prime mover of the epidemic is not inadequate antiretroviral medications, poverty, or bad luck, but people's inability to accept the gothic dimensions of a disease that is transmitted through sexual activity and drug use.

XDR tuberculosis--Implications for global public health

Article Abstract:

A study revealed the presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis as well as extensive drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis caused by a strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to isoniazid and rifampin. Evidence suggests that XDR tuberculosis reflects a failure to implement the measures recommended in the WHO's Stop TB strategy, which emphasizes expanding high-quality DOTS programs and addresses HIV-associated tuberculosis and drug resistance.

HIV in India -- A complex epidemic

Article Abstract:

There has been an Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic in India since the first case was diagnosed in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in 1986, but the extent and complexities of the disease are beginning to be appreciated only twenty years later. The whole AIDS treatment and prevention issue is complicated due to the diverse cultural, social, religious and sexual practices prevalent in the country as well as due to several legal and medical factors.
