Confusions and challenges

Article Abstract:

Patients suffering from cancer need to be reassured about all aspects of their illness and treatment, and it is vital that nursing staff provide this. However, a study of staff on 12 wards catering mainly to cancer patients, revealed that many nurses are unable to talk to patients. A conclusion of this survey is that if nurses are unable to make accurate assessments of patients' problems, then it will be difficult for them to bring potential problems to the notice of doctors.

Supply-side support

Article Abstract:

Infection control nurses (ICNs) should use their clinical experience to influence the purchase of supplies. The United Kingdom National Health Service spends four billion pounds sterling per annum on non-drug supplies. ICNs should be aware of purchasing practice. They should liaise with managers and supply centres. Cost-effective supply should aim at providing the correct quanity of high quality products when they are needed.
