Osteomyelitis in an intravenous drug abuser

Article Abstract:

Osteomyelitis has a high rate of incident among intravenous drug users but is often misdiagnosed. A clinician testing a 46-year-old heroin user with chest pain and a low-grade fever thought the man's normal complete blood count indicated a less serious disease, when the blood cultures testing positive for Staphyloccus aureus indicated a more serious condition. Cell mediated immunity deficiencies in drug abusers make them highly susceptible to osteomyelitis, but antibiotic treatment can be successful in 70-80% of patients if started before the onset of bone necrosis.

A place to grieve

Article Abstract:

The parents of a stillborn child have a strong need to talk, according to midwife Val Lake, who received an MBE in the 1998 New Year's honours list in recognition of her infant bereavement support work. She began by holding informal meetings in her own home for bereaved parents, and these culminated in the formation in Oct 1994 of the Hartlepool Baby Bereavement Support Group. She feels that bereaved parents derive particular benefit from having something tangible to hold or somewhere to go and grieve.
