Early neurodevelopmental growth in children with vertically transmitted human immunodeficiency virus infection

Article Abstract:

Children who acquire HIV infection from their mothers appear to have delayed mental and motor development. Researchers assessed the neurodevelopmental status of 51 children between the ages of four and 16 months and again between 17 and 30 months. All the children were born to HIV-infected mothers and 24 tested HIV-positive. HIV-infected children had delayed motor development compared to uninfected children during both testing periods. The average motor development score remained constant among children in both groups over time. Mental development was similar among both groups of children during the first testing period, although HIV-infected children exhibited delayed mental development between 17 and 30 months of age. Half of the HIV-infected children and 18% of uninfected children had moderate to severe neurodevelopmental disability by 30 months of age.

Tooth loss and dietary intake

Article Abstract:

Elderly people who have lost teeth may change their diet in ways that could increase their risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a study of 31,813 men. Those who had lost five or more teeth were less likely to eat fresh fruits, vegetables and fiber than other men. They were less likely to eat hard-to-chew foods such as apples, pears and carrots and more likely to eat soft foods such as bananas, cantaloupes, and cooked carrots.
