Ovarian Cancer Investigators Aim at Cell Signaling Pathways

Article Abstract:

Gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, other physicians, and oncology nurses from around the world recently discussed research in ovarian cancer at the first International Conference on Ovarian Cancer. Because abnormalities in chemical signals between mammalian cells can lead to cancer, researchers are focusing on drugs to correct these abnormalities. Calcium is involved in some of these signals, and a drug called carboxyamidotriazole that blocks calcium is being tested. A gene called PIK3CA may be an oncogene, a gene that causes cancer. New screening methods are needed because like most cancers, ovarian cancer has a good prognosis if detected early.
