Pacemaker and ICD generator reliability: Meta-analysis of device registries

Article Abstract:

A meta-analysis of prospective pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) registries is performed to determine annual rates of pacemaker and ICD malfunction to identify trends in these rates. Pacemaker reliability has improved markedly and after more than a decade of improving device reliability, the ICD malfunction rate transiently increased before experiencing substantial reductions.

Patent foramen ovale closure devices: Moving beyond equipoise

Article Abstract:

The off-label use of patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure devices in patients with a PFO and a first cryptogenic stroke is increased despite a remarkable paucity of supporting clinical data and a lack of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. It is imperative that randomized controlled clinical trials be performed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of PFO closure devices.

Implantable defibrillators for the prevention of morality in patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Article Abstract:

A study conducted to determine whether implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy reduces all-cause mortality in patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) is presented. It is found that the ICD therapy reduces mortality in selected patients with NICM.
