Panic stations

Article Abstract:

UK health minister Alan Milburn is seeking to encourage up to 140,000 nurses to return to the profession because of a shortage of staff in the National Health Service (NHS). The government has pledged to reduce violence and increase child-care facilities as an incentive to entice nurses back to the NHS, although the major concern for nurses is low pay. Up to 1,000 nurses required more than three days leave in 1997 due to violent attacks occurring in the workplace. The government is targeting ex-nurses and health care assistants in an attempt to retrain nursing staff.
