Partnering for action oriented risk/quality management

Article Abstract:

Minimizing risk in a hospital setting may better be achieved by developing a working collaboration between medical and nursing management. One urban hospital team presented its goals in establishing a collaborative risk team and highlighted some of their accomplishments. Risk team discussions center on local risk issues needing immediate attention, current national issues, or those identified through literature review. This approach has created a more positive partnership among staff members, a tighter chain of command, and more consistent patient care.

Benchmarking: a data-oriented look at improving health care performance

Article Abstract:

Benchmarking creates performance standards by compiling operations data to identify the best unit in a group, then identifying and analyzing that unit's practices which can be applied to other units. A consortium of Cincinnati OH businesses used benchmarking to apply the success rate of a neonatal intensive care unit's early discharge program to lower their employee health care costs.

A comprehensive quality management approach

Article Abstract:

A quality management approach that combines value analysis with shared governance may help hospitals weather the coming changes in health care services. Value analysis is oriented toward purchasing the most cost-effective products and services whereas shared governance focuses on providing good quality patient care. One hospital has benefitted from a combination of both approaches.
