Partnerships to promote a confident return to practice

Article Abstract:

Nurses often fail to return to nursing after a break because they are worried their skills may be outdated. The National Board for Scotland and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Institute in Scotland have been addressing this problem by providing refresher courses for nurses to update their skills. The return-to-practice programme involves completing a study pack and preparing a portfolio. The nurse then agrees with an employer what his or her training needs are and a training package is arranged. When this is completed, the nurse sends the professional portfolio to the RCN.

Face to face

Article Abstract:

Chief nursing officer for Scotland Anne Jarvie has a close personal and working relationship with the Royal College of Nursing Scottish Board Secretary June Andrews. It is important for both to be able to represent their own individual needs within the relationship, although Andrews acknowledges Jarvie has a role to play in government which results in her views having to change regularly. Andrews is a firm believer in role nurses have to play in the future of Scottish health provision.
