Pathogenesis, Natural History, Treatment, and Prevention of Hepatitis C

Article Abstract:

The authors discuss hepatitis C, its appearance as a distinct form of hepatitis, its spread, its slow progression in the body, and its physiological effects, including cirrhosis, liver disease and liver cancer. They also discuss the current state of prevention and treatment. Currently, there is no therapy for hepatitis C that is consistently effective in in all or even most patients. There is no vaccine, but advances in viral research and immunology have given researchers insight into innovative approaches to traditional vaccine-development problems, as well as potentially more effective forms of treatment for patients with the infection.

45-Year Follow-up of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Healthy Young Adults

Article Abstract:

The risk of progressive liver disease among healthy persons with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection seems to be lower than has been believed. A total of 8,568 military recruits from the period of 1948 through 1954 had blood tests done and the samples frozen for 45 years. In testing for HCV antibodies, it was found that the rate of infection then was about the same as it is now (0.2%) During the 45 years of follow-up, two of the 17 HCV-positive persons had liver disease (11.8%) and one died of it (5.9%). Among HCV-negative persons, 1.4% died of liver disease.

Peginterferon and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C

Article Abstract:

A clinical case study of a 44-year-ld woman with chronic hepatitis C who had intermittent fatigue and persistent elevations in serum alanine aminotransferase levels is presented. The patient was recommended treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin, which could lead to sustained viral control and improvement in histologic features of the liver.
