Patient information systems: unbiased information is key

Article Abstract:

The rapid growth of health maintenance organizations has created corresponding expansion in patient information systems. Most systems take the form of cognitive-based services, which use trained specialists to provide emergency advice but are not true information systems, or computer-based systems, which provide standardized responses but are weak on personal contact. Hybrid systems, which usually eliminate human interface, are a third form. Patient information systems will fully develop when they match all patients' needs for data.

Speak to me! An overview of patient communication systems

Article Abstract:

Technological innovations have provided possibilities to improve communication between hospital staff and patients. The most effective means for distance communication is the telephone, and innovations such as SmartTalk can remind patients of appointments and make test results available. Internet access offers expanded communication through electronic mail, although establishing security systems for this mode of communication remains a challenge. Any medical communication requires a reliable, documented, secure system.

Removing the confusion about infusion

Article Abstract:

A variety of infusion technology exists, with different purposes and safety products. The four main types of device are mechanical, elastomeric, membrane and gas. Volumes and rates vary, and special features occur with each type. Most types are disposable, but some mechanical devices are not. Nurses need to know these details that go beyond just connecting up a device.
