Patients with alcohol problems

Article Abstract:

Physicians can play an important role in identifying and treating patients with alcohol problems. Over 40% of US adults drink alcoholic beverages, and as many as 20% of hospital patients may be classified as alcoholic. Physicians can use the patient history, laboratory tests, and several standardized questionnaires to collect reliable information about alcohol use. Brief intervention by physicians can be effective in reducing consumption in patients at risk of alcohol abuse. Drugs, inpatient treatment, and 12-step programs can help in treating alcohol dependence.

Primary care physicians should be trained to administer treatments for heroin addiction so these treatments will be available to more people. There are three effective drug treatments for heroin addiction: methadone, levomethadyl acetate, and buprenorphine. The last two can be given three times a week rather than every day.
