Pay-for-performance programs in family practices in United Kingdom

Article Abstract:

An analysis was conducted on pay-for-performance programs in family practices in the U.K. with the help of data extracted from clinical computing systems for 8015 family practices in the first year of the program (April 2004 to March 2005). It was found that English family practices attained high levels of achievements in the first year of the new pay-for-performance contract. A small number of practices appear to have achieved the high scores by excluding large number of patients by exception reporting.

The celestial fire of conscience- refusing to deliver medical care

Article Abstract:

Physicians, nurses, and pharmacists are increasingly claiming a right to autonomy not only to refuse to provide services that they find objectionable, but even to refuse patients to another provider and inform them of the existence of legal options for care. However, a bill introduced in the Wisconsin legislature permits health care professional to abstain from 'participating' in any number of activities, with 'participating' defined broadly enough to include counseling patients about their choices.
