Long-term outcome in twin-twin transfusion syndrome treated with serial aggressive amnioreduction

Article Abstract:

Removing excessive amounts of amniotic fluid may improve the prognosis of twins affected by twin-twin transfusion syndrome. Twin-twin transfusion syndrome occurs when blood is not supplied equally to both fetuses, causing one to grow normally and one to be growth-restricted. One also has too little amniotic fluid while the other has too much.

Periinatal morbidity and mortality rates in severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome: results of the International Amnioreduction Registry

Article Abstract:

Amnioreduction can improve survival rates of twins who had twin-twin transfusion syndrome before they were born. This syndrome causes blood to flow from one fetus to the other, with mortality rates around 80% if left untreated. Amnioreduction involves removing excess amniotic fluid from the twin who receives the blood.

Doppler ultrasound velocimetry for timing the second intrauterine transfusion in fetuses with anemia from red cell alloimmunization

Article Abstract:

Doctors should give fetuses with red cell alloimmunziation a blood transfusion when blood flow in the middle cerebral artery of the fetus increases. This increased blood flow is a sign of anemia, which in red cell alloimmunziation is caused by the production of maternal antibodies against the baby's blood cells.
