Personalized medicine prompts push to redesign clinical trials

Article Abstract:

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its guidelines for personalized medicine in March 2005 to highlight individual differences in drug response and to detect successful targeted therapies faster. The guidelines recommend unbiased testing, such as blood-based proteomics assays, to understand the human response to the drug in a particular profile.

Iressa's fall from grace points to need for better clinical trials

Article Abstract:

The cancer drug Iressa is showing worrying signs that it may not live up to its promise as the clinical trials results released in December 2004 showed the drug does not prolong survival in patients with non-small lung cancer. This will underscore the need for clinical trials designed specifically to test targeted therapies.
