'Pharmaceutical care' touted as way to cut drug errors

Article Abstract:

'Pharmaceutical care' is a concept aimed at decreasing morbidity and mortality due to the misuse of prescription drugs by providing patient counseling and prescription review. Several health insurance companies, such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, have initiated pilot programs which pay pharmacists consulting fees for performing these services. Patient confidentiality, accreditation for pharmaceutical counseling services and communication between physicians and pharmacists are key issues in the management of pharmaceutical care.
